VIF Program

Host an International Math or Science Teacher

VIF teachers who work in the fields of math and science bring exceptional subject-matter expertise to their schools. Many VIF teachers in these subject areas have majored in a math or science for their primary degree, and have the skills and experience to work in a lab, but opt for the classroom.

They arrive ready to foster the talents of their students, many who have the aptitude to become next generation of physicists, engineers and developers of new technology. These teachers arm students not only with the core knowledge to stand out in a global workforce, but also the exposure to other cultures and perspectives critical to being a successful in the real world.

VIF recruits top-notch math and science teachers from countries including the Philippines and Canada, New Zealand, Australia and the U.K. – countries that routinely rank higher than the U.S. in the Program for International Student Assessments (PISA), a metric of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. Meet Romain Bertrand

Country: France
Teaches in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, North Carolina

When Romain Bertrand told his seventh-grade math class at Alexander Graham Middle School how French students learn long division, the students were so fascinated that they immediately begged Mr. Bertrand for more stories about French schooling and the lifestyles of their peers there.

Bertrand uses math as a jumping off point for discussions on the similarities and differences between the U.S. and his homeland. For instance, a lesson on converting kilometers to miles led to a comparison of speed limits in France and America. During his free period, Bertrand often works with small groups of students to give them a chance to practice French conversation with a native speaker.
